Happy Friday and happy end of the year! We can't believe that it is already winter break and hope that everyone gets to recharge for the next two weeks. Look out for Quarter 2 Progress Reports that went home today! Please remember that there is no school after today until we all return in person on Monday, January 3rd. We found evidence to support topics to prepare for our debates about the topics! - SS = We learned about what life was like for people in different colonies! - Math (201) = We finished our second math unit, Comparing Bits & Pieces. We will be starting our fraction operations unit next! - Math (217) = We will be finishing our math unit on integers next week and will take the unit test on Tuesday. - Science = We started our second Science unit called Modeling Matter. Here are some academic updates from this past week: - ELA (201) = We conducted research to find evidence to support our arguments about specific topics. We then presented our arguments in the form of a debate! - ELA (217) = We analyzed two sides of an argument about kids playing extreme sports and wrote a paragraph about it. - SS = We learned about how Native Americans and Europeans traded and interacted. - Math (201) = We finished learning how fractions and decimals are related by working on a variety of skills this week. We compared and ordered fractions, converted between improper fractions and mixed numbers, compared and ordered decimals, and learned about benchmark fractions and decimals. We have a unit test next week that we will be preparing for on Thursday. - Math (217) = We transitioned this week to learning the rules with multiplying & dividing integers. We will be finishing this unit next week and will take the unit test on Friday. - Science = We will be starting our second Science unit called Modeling Matter. We loved getting to talk to you about your kids and know that working together is helping us start the second quarter strong! We have continued to analyze argumentative writing to see different viewpoints. Then, we worked on picking a side to write a response. - ELA (217) = We finished our Wordly Wise unit 4! We started to learn about argumentative versus persuasive writing. We also focused on understanding the different features of argumentative writing. - SS = We have been working on analyzing documents to help us write a response about why so many colonists died in early Jamestown. - Math (201) = This week we extended the number line to compare positive and negative numbers. We learned what opposites are and how to find absolute value of numbers. We are going to start comparing decimals and fractions next week! - Math (217) = This week we started adding and subtracting integers. We found patterns in the problems we solved and are developing algorithms for solving these types of problems. - Science = This week we took the unit test for Patterns of Earth & Sky and were assigned the final unit project. Students have chosen a constellation and will be creating a brochure about it. Presentations for their projects will be Monday 11/29 for 217 and Tuesday 11/30 for 201. Happy Wednesday! We had a great short first week of quarter 2! We can't believe how quickly November is sneaking by us. We are so proud of the hard work and independence that our 5th graders have been displaying. With that, we have a few changes moving forward in addition to our weekly updates:
- Late Work = We indicated this at Open House, however, we wanted to give students first quarter to get acclimated to being back in school and turning in assignments. We will now be taking 10% off for late work. - No Names = No name papers will have 1 point deducted from the grade. - Aspen = Each week, we will have students log in to check ASPEN, however, they should begin to do this independently as well. - Thursday, November 11 = No school in observance of Veteran's Day - FRIDAY, November 12 = CPS announced Friday will be a non-attendance day for students and are calling it Vaccination Awareness Day. The students started looking at equivalent fractions. We also presented the math projects, My Favorite Number. - Math (217) = We learned about inequalities and how to write, graph and solve them. We also practiced evaluating expressions to prepare for the unit test on Tuesday. - Science = . We started answering the Chapter 3 question, do we see different stars at different times of the year. We planned an investigation to do in the Simulator and added to the Mt. Nose class model. Be sure to ask your students about the difference between the earth's rotation and orbit!
