Happy Friday! We had a great week and can't believe there are only 3 weeks until spring break! Here are a few updates and reminders for next week:
- Vaccine Cards = When your student is fully vaccinated, you can submit a picture of the vaccine card to have on record by emailing a copy to Nurse Annie --> [email protected] - Mask Optional starting Monday, March 14th = CPS has announced that our schools will be starting to be mask optional on Monday. We had discussions about this in our classrooms about being respectful, non-judgmental, and providing understanding and space to all regardless of their choices. The only students who will be required to wear masks will be those returning from a quarantine from having Covid or being exposed for days 6-10. - Illinois Assessment of Readiness (IAR) = We are scheduled to continue this year's IAR assessment on Thursday, March 24th. We will be taking the math assessments on this day. - Text Structure Quiz (201) = Wednesday, March 23rd - G & L 8 Test = Friday, March 25th - Science Unit Test for Modeling Matter = Wednesday, March 23 (217) and Friday, March 25 (201). - Bullying Prevention Unit = Our school's Culture & Climate Team has been looking for a new SEL curriculum. As a school wide initiative, the middle school has started to pilot a program that we are now going to start using in 5th grade. We will be working on a Bullying Prevention Unit starting next week. - Quarter 3 = As we are nearing the end of the quarter, we are continuing to have students check Aspen weekly and encourage them to be turning in missing work sooner than later. We are hoping to have a better quarter in regards to work completion. - Math Facts = Remember to practice your multiplication facts regularly up to 12! Here are some academic updates from this past week: - ELA (201) = We have been taking different topics and writing about them using different types of text structures. - ELA (217) = We finished up working on our novel and did a fantastic job presenting our final projects! - SS = We have continued learning about the Declaration of Independence! - Math (201) = We have a good understanding of how to find area and perimeter of triangles and how triangles relate to rectangles. We will spend a few days working on measurement conversions and will then get back to learning about area and perimeter of parallelograms. - Math (217) = We have a good understanding of what makes two shapes similar and how the scale factor affects the new figure's area, perimeter and side lengths. We will spend a few days working on measurement conversions and will then get back to learning about similar figures. - Science = We have finished our unit on matter. We will be reviewing for the Unit Test on Monday/Tuesday and will take the final assessment at the end of the week. (Wed = 217 and Fri = 201). We hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Happy Friday! We are hoping today was the last bit of snow we see for a while! Here are a few updates and reminders for next week:

The students will explore the idea of scale factor and also look at similar polygons. - Science = We are finishing the last chapter in this unit this week and will be studying what happens when liquids are mixed with other liquids. We have also been seeing how to use that information to create a summary. - ELA (217) = We have been focusing this week on comparing and contrasting perspectives. We have also been working on determining the theme of our novel and of short passages. - SS = We are officially learning about the start of the Revolutionary War! We have been learning about the Battle of Lexington and Concord as well as the Battle of (not) Bunker Hill. - Math (201) = We started looking at area and perimeter of rectangles this week by designing bumper car designs and storm shelters. We will continue this topic next week! - Math (217) = We began a new unit this week on similar figures. We are trying to discover what it means to be mathematically similar. The students created some game characters called the Wumps and we are trying to determine which characters are part of the Wump family. - Science = We started our last chapter in this unit this week and will be studying what happens when liquids are mixed with other liquids. We have been working on comparing characters, comparing stories, making connections, and summarizing. - ELA (217) = We have been focusing this week on determining the meaning behind symbols and the impact of symbolism in our story. - SS =We stepped into the lives of groups seeking to gain or keep independence and tried to get others to join us in our efforts. - Math (201) = We have finished our fraction unit this week and started our unit project. Students will have time next week to work on the project in class and then will present their projects on Thursday! - Math (217) = We have finished our polygon unit and completed the final design challenge today. Ask your child how their tower did in our challenge! Next week, we will have a fraction boot camp! - Science = We know have a good understanding of why some solids dissolve in liquids and others do not dissolve. We looked at several nanoscale models and saw how some molecules are more attracted to others. Ask your child which ingredients they know are soluble and why! We have been working on our Holocaust Survivor Projects. - ELA (217) = We started our new novel and have been working on deciphering character traits through thoughts, actions, and dialogue. - SS =We learned more about events that led up to the Revolutionary War while also gaining a better understanding of taxes. - Math (201) = Students have spent the week working with fraction fact families and solving word problems with fractions. We will finish our fraction unit next week with our unit test scheduled for Thursday, February 17th. - Math (217) = We finished up our unit on polygons and angles this week. We will review and prepare for the unit test on Wednesday, February 16th. - Science = We have been learning about what happens when you mix a solid with a liquid. In order to understand this further, we used our Simulation to see what the molecules would be doing when a substance dissolves or does not dissolve. Ask you student about KCF! - Math (217) = We are continuing our geometry unit and have been exploring the properties of polygons and their angles. This week we learned an interesting fact about triangles and its side lengths. Ask your student what is necessary to "build a triangle." - Science = In our role as food scientists, we have been looking at the properties of molecules. We started the second chapter, where we will investigate what is necessary to create a new salad dressing that does not separate and does not contain sediment. The students finalized a drawn nanoscale model to explain how the dye molecules separated. We will be finishing the first chapter of this unit next week and will be writing scientific explanations on why the dye molecules separated during the chromatography test. Here are some academic updates from this past week: - ELA (201) = We officially finished our argumentative essays and have started to build background knowledge on WW2 to start our new novel unit. - ELA (217) = We conducted research for our argumentative topics to record evidence and create bridges to explain them. - SS = We completed our 'Come to Our Colony' project to entice people to come to either the northern, middle, or southern colonies. - Math (201) = We have been learning and practicing how to add and subtract fractions. We now know we need to find a common denominator first and then we can add and subtract fractions. We have also been working with mixed numbers and have had to borrow sometimes when subtracting. There will be a quiz on adding and subtracting fractions next week! - Math (217) = We have started a new geometry unit called "Shapes and Designs." We have been reviewing and learning about angles. We will practice using protractors and angle rulers to draw angles next week. - Science = In our role as food scientists, we have begun looking at the properties of molecules. We conducted a chromatography test on food coloring and and now trying to understand what is happening at the nanoscale with the molecules.
